Front Lip Spoiler Kit

The STI front lip spoiler attaches easily with the supplied hardware to the underside of the bumper cover. This series of front bumper spoilers was developed by STI through wind tunnel testing to provide real aero benefits while enhancing vehicle style. The result is improved stability and balance during high speed operation. Reduces ground clearance of front bumper by approximately 40mm. Use in combination with RST-5879B rubber skirt lip to enhance the aero effect and provide protection to the underside of the spoiler. Semi-gloss black finish with STI emblem attached.

Usually ships within 2 to 3 days

Manufacturer: STI

Applications:

  • Subaru Impreza STI MY04-07

How does this product work? Essentially the effect of the lip spoiler is to clean up and reduce the air flow underneath the car while increasing the high pressure air flow over top the car. The result is a reduction in lift, particularly at the front of the car, while also enhancing the effect of other aero components on the car such as a rear diffuser and rear spoilers. The use of the optional rubber skirt maximizes the effects by further reducing the clearance between the spoiler and the ground.

Can you briefly explain aerodynamic lift, downforce, and drag as it affects a car? Aerodynamic lift occurs when air pressures acting on the bottom side of the vehicle (or component) are higher than that acting on the top side resulting in a net upward force. Downforce is negative lift. The lift forces add or subtract from the forces affecting the tire contact patches and therefore will alter available traction. The distribution of lift will affect the handling balance if the effect on the front and rear wheels is not equal. Drag is a measure of the air resistance acting on the vehicle. Lift, downforce, and drag forces increase exponentially with speed.

Does this really provide a noticeable performance advantage? The aerodynamic effects amount to a couple percentage points. The benefits will only be noticeable at very high speeds and therefore in a street application it should be considered purely as a style enhancement. For a dedicated track racing application a front splitter with a large surface is preferred if the regulations allow.

What are the negatives of using this product? This product reduces the ground clearance and extends forward from the front bumper and therefore can easily be damaged by curbs, steep driveways, etc.
